Unpopular opinions
How to do it:
- Post in your digital channel: “Maybe it was that time you nonchalantly asked, ‘What’s the big deal about Star Wars?’ Or maybe it was when you told a group of dog rescuers that ‘Pugs aren’t cute.’ At some point you’ve had a moment when you realized your opinion was not in line with popular thought. Please share an example in this judgement free zone!”
- Start the discussion with an unpopular opinion of your own – here’s a quiz to help you find one.
- Encourage interaction as the team responds – lead the way with follow-up questions, comments and reactions.
Why it works:
- Discussing (and at times disagreeing about) fun, personal topics is a great way to practice speaking up and respectful dialogue.
- To join in, participants will need to be a little vulnerable – which when met with acceptance will make them feel worthy and more likely to share on other topics.
- There’s a big need to make employees feel more empowered here – only 3 in 10 employees feel like their opinions matter at work.
